Abstract

The first description of keloids was given by Smith Papyrus in 3000 BC. The research on keloids faces several hurdles including absence of animal models and lack of interest of funding agencies and industry. Keloids and hypertrophic scars (HS) are the result of an overgrowth of fibrous tissue following healing of a cutaneous injury. Keloids extend beyond the margins of the original wound, do not usually regress spontaneously and tend to recur after excision, while hypertrophic scars do not expand beyond the boundaries of the initial injury and may undergo partial spontaneous resolution.
