Abstract

The non-glycolic acid peels are safe and well tolerated provided proper patient selection is done and the procedure is done in the prescribed manner, avoiding complications. As in all peels, proper counseling, prepeel priming, and postpeel care are important. There has been resurgence in the use of chemical peel to refresh and rejuvenate the skin. Other than glycolic acid, there are many peeling agents with varied beneficial effects of chemical peel. The most commonly used non-glycolic acid peels are salicylic acid (SA) peel, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel, Jessner’s peel and tretinoin peel. Many newer peels are being introduced like mandelic acid, lactic acid, pyruvic acid, polyhydroxy acid, phytic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and malic acid peels. These newer peels are gentler with lower concentration, available singly as well as in combinations. Many have added antioxidants and humectants to make them potent, with improved tolerance and less irritant potential. This chapter deals with SA peel, TCA peel, Jessner’s peel.
