CO2 laser, first invented by Kumar Patel in 1960 was first used on human skin by Leon Goldman in 1963. Initially used for resurfacing and gradually its indication became wider and wider. Over the past decade, advances in laser technology have allowed dermatologists to improve the appearance of scars and wrinkles and to remove benign skin growths using CO2 laser. Five decades after the introduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser in the field of dermatology, since 1963, it still continues to be the gold standard in ablative lasers. Being a high powered laser, CO2 laser has significant advantage over the conventional surgical procedure because of its bloodless surgical field, efficacy and precision. It ensures minimal discomfort and quick recovery enabling quick return to work. However, before using this laser a detailed knowledge of the machine and its application is of paramount importance. The CO2 laser requires expert skill. The proper use of this laser will give a great therapeutic result and maximum comfort to the patient, rendering him quick return to his work with minimal discomfort.
