Abstract

Photographic documentation has always been considered important in cosmetic surgery. Photographic documentation of plastic and cutaneous surgery has been going on for a long time now. Gordon Buck (1807–1877) is considered to be one of the first surgeons to use preoperative patient photographs to communicate his results in 1845. The first use of photography in plastic surgery per se was by James Balossa (1814–1868) of Budapest University for demonstrating a nasal reconstruction. The shift from conventional film photography to digital photography for clinical documentation has been a big milestone in the history of clinical photography. Many limitations associated with film photography have been overcome by shifting to digital imaging. Digital photography also has gradually become cost-effective. The rapid advances in digital imaging technology have thrown up newer opportunities and challenges as far as clinical photography is concerned. The present day dermatosurgeon needs to be very aware of not only what technology has in store for clinical photography but also how well he can utilize the same in his clinical practice.
