Abstract

Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) have been a bane for healthcare sector since a long time. Huge amount of resources are being spent to combat the ill effects causing extraordinary economic loss. The enormous cost incurred due to HAIs is the result of direct and indirect cost spent on treating the patient as well as the resources expended by the caregivers. Huge numbers of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) are lost on account of HAIs. The intangible cost is usually not calculated while assessing the overall cost even though it is an important factor. On the other hand, the resources required to prevent HAIs are miniscule in comparison.
