Infection prevention and control must be made up of evidence-based knowledge, and up-to-date skills and implementation practices. Healthcare associated infections are a threat to population health. Due to frequent contact between healthcare workers and patients, pathogens can be transmitted from one patient to another, if effective hand hygiene is not maintained as a minimum requirement. It is the responsibility of healthcare workers to keep the patients in their care safe by modeling effective and frequent hand washing practices. The increasing prevalence of antimicrobialresistant pathogens in healthcare facilities is mainly due to overuse of antibiotics and poor compliance with recommended infection control practices. To control the spread of such pathogens, healthcare facilities must reduce overuse and abuse of antibiotics, implement new multidisciplinary programs to improve hand hygiene practices among healthcare workers and improve compliance with recommended barrier precautions
