Abstract

Antibiotic agents have, without doubt, revolutionized healthcare in the past century. However, due to inappropriate use, bacteria have developed resistance to most of the antibiotic agents that are available now. Consequently, future infection control not only appears difficult, but the possibility of minor infections turning life-threatening appears more realistic than before. This is further complicated by the fact that research towards development of newer antibiotics is not forthcoming. Lack of initiative from the pharmaceutical industry towards research and production of newer antibiotic stems from the fact that on one hand the clinicians wants newer antibiotics but on the other, they discourage the use of newer antibiotics for the fear of production of resistance to them also. Because of these logistics, it is now realized that the only way to tackle the problem of antibiotic resistance is by preventing nosocomial infections (by putting best practices in place), educating healthcare workers and practicing antimicrobial stewardship among others. The issue of antibiotic resistance has now become a matter of national importance.
