Abstract

Injuries of the Maxillofacial Skeleton ​​​​​(words 193) This chapter outlines the etiology of maxillofacial injuries, clinical examination of a patient with maxillofacial injuries, basic principles of treatment of a fracture and different types of wiring and splints. The chapter describes the etiology in the form of direct and indirect violence. It describes preliminary examination with a brief mention of Glasgow Coma Scale, and the history of the injury, which are beneficial to the postgraduate students and practitioners. The chapter describes clinical examination in detail; mentioning the extra-oral and intra-oral examination (inspection and palpation) with suitable diagrams. It also describes radiological examination of a patient with injuries. The chapter also describes a simple definition of a fracture, classical signs of a fracture of the jaw, and basic principles of treatment of a fracture. The chapter describes the advantages and disadvantages of both closed and open reduction in tabulated form for easy comprehension by the students. Lastly, the chapter describes different types of wiring, the technique of application of the wiring, and different types of splints and the method of their application with good diagrams. The chapter concludes with brief mention about Bone plate osteosynthesis, AO System, Miniplate osteosynthesis and Champy’s osteosynthesis.
