Abstract

The term laser stands for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. The first working laser used on extracted tooth was developed by Maiman in 1960. Since then ,applications of lasers are expanding. This chapter gives information to the reader ,about fundamentals of laser operation, and components of laser system, physical properties, characteristics, biological interactions, classification, advantages, applications and techniques of using lasers in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The chapter also deals with scar excision with laser, use of Er:YAG laser, low level laser therapy, and finally the sterilization and infection control of laser unit. Various clinical photographs of some cases treated with the help of laser have been presented.
