Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are two phases of the same disease, which can be termed as venous thromboembolism (VTE). A thrombus formed in the deep veins of lower limbs in hours, days or weeks can get dislodged, travel through the right ventricle (RV) and obstruct the pulmonary vasculature giving rise to various clinical presentations of PE. Pathogenesis of pulmonary embolism, diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and management of pulmonary embolism are discussed.
