This chapter discusses history of statins. The discovery of compactin—initial molecule, mechanism of action, pharmacology, adverse effects and drug interactions, and safety results are described. Current indications of statin, statin trials—primary prevention, statin trials—stable coronary heart disease, statin trials—acute coronary syndromes, utility of statins in special populations, statins in combination with other lipid-lowering drugs, which statin and what dose to start with—Indian scenario, and future directions are discussed.
