Abstract

Surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD) as it exists today largely developed in the latter half of the 20th century. The development of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) was the single most important landmark in the history of cardiac surgery and the timeline of cardiac surgery is often divided into the pre-CPB era and the post-CPB era. Landmark moments in the development of surgery explains atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, atrioventricular septal defect, total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, tetralogy of fallot, transposition of great arteries, and single ventricle. Origins of congenital heart surgery in India are described.
