Abstract

Various corneal surgical instruments used for penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and lamellar and laser procedures are discussed. The basic PK set includes instruments that grasp, cut and tie like 0.12 mm toothed Castroviejo forceps, specialized curved corneal scissors, a globe support ring such as the Flieringa ring, Calipers and many more. Different types of each instrument, their usage in operative procedure are discussed along with the representative pictures. Various instruments used for Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty and Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty are described. In early days, the femtosecond laser was used to create flaps in laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Modification made in the software that made it more user friendly is discussed. Different commercially available lasers like the Intralase (Irvine, California), the Femtec (Heidelberg, Germany), the Femto LDV (Port, Switzerland) and the VisuMax (Jena, Germany) are mentioned.
