Abstract

The endothelium is a nonregenerative cell layer that loses cells throughout life. The specular microscopy has the ability to detect both quantitative and qualitative changes within this very important layer of cells. The endothelial cells are susceptible to various diseases. The goal of qualitative analysis is to provide a subjective evaluation of the health of endothelial cells based on an overall visual assessment with focus on variability of endothelial structures. The purpose of quantitative interpretation of the endothelium using specular microscope is to analyse the cell area, variation of cell size (polymegathism), variation of cell shape (pleomorphism), and cell perimeter. The chapter here discusses about the practical use of specular microscopy, its methods, and various clinical findings of specular microscopy.
