Abstract

Recurrent corneal erosion syndrome refers to the episodic erosion of the corneal epithelial cells. Although its pathophysiology is not completely understood, it is associated with corneal dystrophies or traumatic abrasions. Various ophthalmic or systemic diseases like Reis-Bucklers, macular, granular and Meesmann’s dystrophies, diabetes and many others are associated with the incidence of recurrent erosions. A careful examination of the affected eye is required for the diagnosis. Keen slit lamp examination is generally performed to diagnose eye erosion. Other techniques used are broad, angled slit beam examination with fluorescein instillation and retroillumination examination of the cornea with dilation of pupil. Representative pictures and methodology of both these techniques are well described. Surgical therapies are recommended to the patients in whom medical treatment is ineffective. Various surgical therapies for treating erosion syndrome are described and tabulated. The therapy is chosen depending upon the severity of erosions, presence of concomitant dystrophies, location and patients conditions. All these techniques are discussed in detail.
