Abstract

The physical trauma of cornea which can lead to sight-threatening/damage must be quickly recognized and treated. Common physical traumas of cornea include injuries from fingernails, fishing hooks, air-bags and bomb blasts related to military campaigns. The extent of damage is not always limited to the cornea as the surrounding tissues and the posterior segment may also be involved and hence a thorough ophthalmic evaluation should be done before the initiation of treatment. The examiner should evaluate eye with a thorough history and proper ophthalmic evaluation using techniques like slit-lamp, sclerotic scatter, retroillumination, gonioscopy, intraocular pressure measurement, CT and MRI. With proper evaluation most appropriate management course can be chosen for the patient. In this chapter surgical steps of corneal abrasions and corneal lacerations which are caused by physical injuries are discussed in detail with images.
