Abstract

In 1961, the Eye Bank Association of American (EBAA) was created. It sets the criteria for donor selection. Some of these criteria are donor’s age, presence of infectious diseases, and noninfectious corneal pathology. Procedures of tissue retrieval, tissue evaluation, tissue preparation, and storage are explained. A large portion of eye banking activity involves collection, evaluation, processing and supply of human corneal tissues. Eye banks also collect, process and supply other tissue used in ophthalmology. There is description on the preparation and preservation of amniotic membrane and scleral tissues. Improvement in numbers of transplantable corneas, corneal storage methods, use of specular microscopy, better networking among eye banks, training and certification of eye bank technicians, development of procedure manuals, development and periodic revision of medical standards and accreditation of each individual eye bank have improved the quality and standard of eye banking. The most important challenge for eye banking is in understanding the causes of corneal blindness. In addition, eye banks must keep in mind the financial and legal considerations.
