Abstract

This chapter discusses adolescent health. It is characterized by progression toward sexual and reproductive maturity (puberty), development of adult mental processing and identity, and transition from total socioeconomic dependence to relative independence. It extends from onset of puberty to completion of physical growth. The main causes of adolescent morbidity include anemia, under nutrition, obesity, abuse, sexual and reproductive health problems, substance abuse, mental health problems, infectious diseases and chronic diseases like asthma and diabetes mellitus. Adequate attention to the health and development of adolescents will be crucial to the sustainable achievement of many millennium development goals (MDGs). Investing in adolescent health will have a long-term positive impact on health and well-being throughout the life course and across generations, in all regions of the world, especially for India where adolescents form 23% of Indian population.
