Abstract

This chapter discusses specific learning disability (SLD). It is a heterogeneous group of disorders manifest by significant difficulties in the acquisition and the use of listening, speaking, reading, writitng, reasoning, or mathematical abilities. These disorders are intrinsic to the individual, presumed to be due to central nervous system dysfunction and may occur across the life span. Problems in self-regulatory behaviors, social perception and social interaction may exist with learning disabilities, but do not by themselves constitute learning disability. Milestones, gross motor skills, speech and language skills, academic skills, cognitive skills, attention, memory, behavior and overall personal social development are all affected in some way or the other if a child has a SLD.
