Abstract

This chapter discusses pediatric orthopedics. Orthopedics as a specialty started out with the problem of straightening deformities in children at a time when the incidence of deforming diseases, like rickets and skeletal infections, was very high among children in Europe. Disruptions of the epiphyseal plate are more common as they are the weakest part of the bone in children and account for nearly one-third of all childhood fractures. Birth Fractures are seen in newborn babies and are more common in deliveries in breech presentation, particularly when there is difficulty in labor. Immobilization by simple strapping for a few weeks is sufficient for these fractures. Battered baby syndrome is a condition where children are brought with one or more fractures with a suspicious history of fall. The history does not correlate with the type of fracture. There may be multiple generalized contusions along with a single fracture.
