Abstract

This chapter discusses newborn care. Newborn care is assuming more and more importance in both developed and developing countries. Nonuniformity in definitions and understanding of the terminologies has caused enormous concern to those who care for the mother and the baby. It is essential that uniformity exists at least within a country if not in the whole world. The female germ cell before fertilization is known as ovum. It is arbitrarily considered to be the first 14 days of gestation as the exact day of fertilization is difficult to assess. The duration of pregnancy is measured from the first day of the last menstrual period and gestational age is expressed in completed weeks.
