Abstract

This chapter discusses pediatric procedures. Intramuscular injection is one of the most common procedures that a physician would be carrying out in day-to-day practice. In infants and young children the anterolateral aspect in the mid portion of the thigh is the best site, in children who have started to walk and with a well developed buttock the upper and outer quadrant of the gluteal region may be used. The size of the needle between 22 G and 24 G will depend on the consistency of the drug being administered and the age of the child and the length of the needle should not be more than 1 inch. Rectal administration of drugs is a safe, easy and efficient way of administering certain drugs especially in emergency situations. Medications like paracetamol and diazepam are available for rectal use.
