Abstract

Iron toxicity in pediatric age is commonly due to accidental consumption of mother’s sugar-coated iron tablets by the child. The toxic effects are on local gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa leading to corrosion and occasionally perforation. Diagnosis can be done by history taking, and checking for the serum iron level; this will help in monitoring the management. After 24 hours of consumption if this is not intervened, the child develops hepatic failure, cardiogenic shock and severe metabolic acidosis. The X-ray abdomen taken soon after consumption of iron tablets can detect nonabsorbed iron in the gut. The chapter discusses in detail about the treatment required, the process of iron poisoning and its prevention for further absorption along with flowchart.
