Abstract

A safe and timely transport saves lives. The benefit of transporting any particular patient, in his current condition, should outweigh the risk inherent in the transport. Before making a decision the pediatrician should collect certain information about the status of the patient, patient’s current medical setting, capabilities of the transport team, and capabilities of the receiving institution. The pediatrician should not give unrealistic expectation of referred hospital. A complete copy of hospital chart and the transfer note documents should be given to the family member related to the patient before the patient is transferred. The chapter also discusses about some topics such as do’s and don’ts, benefits and risk, mode of transport, skills needed by physician, nurse and technician, how to counsel the family, and equipments required in the ambulance while taking the patient.
