Abstract

The pediatric patients who are older than 1 month and younger than 18 years are admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. The patient requiring close monitoring (more than hourly vital signs) due to potentially unstable conditions is admitted under level 2 care (unventilated). They require more than 50% oxygen to maintain oxygen saturations > 92%. Established guidelines should be met prior to transfer/discharge from the PICU regardless of the diagnosis. Interfacility transfer requires completed transfer formalities including doctor to doctor communication, nursing report, copies of chart and laboratory investigation reports/X-rays, CT scans and so on. The chapter here discusses in detail about the various levels of admission criteria the procedures to be followed during discharge and the types of care required for each level.
