Abstract

Routine urine examination is an important part of routine investigations. In this chapter, normal urine constituents, importance of urine analysis, how to collect urine sample for different tests, importance of examination of fresh urine and methods of preservation of urine for routine and 24 hrs urine testing are described. Indications and procedures of important biochemical tests in urine, e.g. presence of sugar, proteinuria, hematuria, ketone bodies, bile salts and bile pigments are also narrated. Importance of microscopic examination of urine including organized deposits like pus cells, RBCs, cast and unorganized deposits of different crystals are also incorporated. Urine testing by commercially available trip methods is also described.
