Abstract

This chapter provides detail description of echocardiography in infective endocarditis. Echocardiography is one of the three cornerstones in the diagnostic process of infective endocarditis, together with the clinical manifestations and the microbiology. It can detect vegetation, possible complications of the disease, and the hemodynamic repercussion of the infection. Therefore, echocardiography plays a key role not only in the diagnosis of the disease but also in the treatment (it can help guiding in the challenging decision of when and how to operate) and in the prognostic stratification of infective endocarditis. The chapter has 32 well illustrated diagrams and images. Two tables are included to highlight modified duke criteria for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis and causes of false-positive results in the diagnosis of infective endocarditis. 78 references are included at the end of the chapter to facilitate further reading.
