Abstract

This chapter introduces left ventricular systolic function and M-mode and 2D echocardiographic assessment. The evaluation of left ventricular systolic function by echocardiography has undergone recent advancements. Assessment of ejection fraction as a surrogate for left ventricular systolic function is one of the primary clinical questions for which echocardiograms are obtained. A review of methodologies for determining ejection fraction and/or left ventricular function by M-mode and 2D echocardiography allows for a better understanding of advantages, disadvantages, and appropriate indications for echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricle (LV) systolic function. The chapter has 8 well illustrated diagrams and images echocardiography images. 23 references are given at the end of the chapter to facilitate further reading.
