Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to familiarize the reader with the echocardiographic evaluation for acquired heart diseases in childhood. In this chapter, three of the most common acquired cardiovascular diseases in children, namely, infective endocarditis, RHD, and Kawasaki disease are discussed, and further in-depth discussion can be found in comprehensive texts and other sources. After reading this chapter you will able to know infective endocarditis, modified duke criteria for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis, echocardiographic findings, complications of infective endocarditis, rheumatic heart disease, Kawasaki disease, coronary ectasia and aneurysms by echocardiography. Liberal use of seven illustrative labelled screen images and table are intended to orient the reader as well as provide an example of the anatomical defect or finding being discussed for better understanding. There are 23 references given at the end of the chapter to facilitate further reading.
