Atlas of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology

by Lester J Layfield

The present Atlas describes the Fine Needle Aspiration technique, including staining methods and ancillary testing. Flow cytometry for the investigation of lymphoid lesions and newer molecular testing methodologies including fluorescence in-situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction techniques are discussed in relation to their use with FNA specimens. The Atlas illustrates the majority of lesions encountered in busy FNA services and describes diagnostic cytomorphologic features. The book is divided into fourteen chapters covering the majority of lesions likely to undergo FNA. Special emphasis is given to neoplasms of the salivary glands, carcinoma of the breast, neoplasms of the lung and mediastinum along with commonly encountered neoplasms of the kidney, liver and skin. Individual chapters focus specifically on FNA cytologic findings of thyroid nodules and the musculoskeletal system. In the chapter on musculoskeletal system, helpful ancillary tests are described for the workup of a number of sarcomas. A chapter focuses on fine-needle aspirations of pediatric lesions and a chapter discusses recent advances in criteria and diagnostic approach to cysts and neoplasms of the pancreaticobiliary system.
