Abstract

This chapter discusses about the pediatric septic shock. Septic shock is a common presentation in the pediatric emergency room (ER) and is one of the most common causes of mortality in pediatric intensive care units (PICU). “Shock” is the clinical expression of acute circulatory dysfunction and consequent failure to deliver sufficient oxygen and other nutrients to tissue beds. “Shock” is the clinical expression of acute circulatory dysfunction and consequent failure to deliver sufficient oxygen and other nutrients to tissue beds. The main focus of this chapter is on clinical progression of septic shock, immunity in septic shock, definitions and severity of sepsis, early recognition of septic shock, monitoring parameters in pediatric septic shock, management of shock and multi-pronged sepsis control strategy. Catecholamine refractory shock and prognosis and outcome of septic shock are also discussed in this chapter.
