Abstract

The main concern of this chapter is to present post-cardiac arrest syndrome. Post-cardiac arrest syndrome is a complex pathophysiological state that results after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) following a successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is a unique and complex combination of pathophysiological processes including post-cardiac brain injury, post-cardiac myocardial dysfunction and systemic ischemia/reperfusion response. The pathophysiology of post-cardiac arrest syndrome is complex. Early hemodynamic optimization and therapeutic hypothermia have definite evidence. A multidisciplinary, comprehensive, time sensitive care tailored to available resources is the key to reversing the pathophysiological changes of post-cardiac arrest syndrome. Cardiovascular system: early hemodynamic optimization and antiarrhythmic drugs are organ-specific evaluation and support. Neuroprotective strategies, therapeutic hypothermia, prognostic factors and adjunctive investigations of post-cardiac arrest syndrome are also discussed in this chapter.
