by SK Kaluskar

Diseases of the external ear are quite common in any ENT surgeon’s clinical practice. Sporadic descriptions of these diseases are usually found in any Ear, Nose and Throat textbook. However, the author feels that there is a considerable lacuna in this commonly affected field for more information especially in relation to the varieties of the pathologies that exists. It also lacks the details of the surgical steps for a “budding” ENT surgeon. The book describes a fascinating evolution of the external ear, a basic understanding of the embryology, anatomy and physiology of the external ear. Following these fundamentals the author discusses congenital anomalies of the ear and the step by step surgical treatment of common conditions. Subsequent chapters considers in details of traumatic, inflammatory, neoplastic and certain rare conditions of the external ear with profuse examples of clinical and operative photographs. The author has made a humble attempt following his clinical and surgical experience of the last more than four decades to compile these various diseases of the ear in a concise, clear and easy to understand texts along with clinical photographs. It contains profuse preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative photographs including the surgical details of step by step for a novice surgeon. Special attention has been drawn to the details of the technique for the common problem of “bat ears” both in children and adults. Various tips and quips are given throughout the book to help the surgeon for a precise diagnosis, management and important surgical steps with clinical and operative photographs.
