The book “Handbook on Falciparum Malaria” discusses about the overview, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features of falciparum malaria. Malaria is a complex and deadly disease risking about half of the world’s population and contributes majorly to poverty and limiting economic development. This book has chapters detailing the treatments and side effects of antimalarial therapy. This book also highlights the upsurge in the disease after initial control due to the development of resistance of mosquitoes to insecticides as well as of the Plasmodium to conventional drugs. The life cycle of malaria parasite, plasmodium is and is very well described in the book chapters. The release of cytokines in response to parasites manifests headache, fever and rigors, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, tiredness, aching joints and muscles, thrombocytopenia, immunosuppression, coagulopathy and central nervous system manifestations. Multiorgan dysfunction syndrome is a n extension of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome and can be mild, moderate or severe. This book also highlights the recommendations for obstetric management specific to malaria infection in pregnancy (RCOG GREEN-top guideline) and mentions all details related to management of maternal infections during pregnancy. Various achievements towards malaria control have been due to long lasting insecticidal nets, indoor residual spraying, rapid diagnostic tests and artemisinin based combination therapies. This book also has selected chapters highlighting cerebral malaria, prevention strategies, laboratory and serological diagnosis. This book will definitely enrich the knowledge towards better understanding of the disease.
