Abstract

This chapter discusses about the technique for abdominal multiorgan procurement, where coordination among several surgical teams involved is essential for a successful outcome. In the case of donors after cardiac death (DCD), once the donor has been pronounced dead, a laparotomy is immediately performed. Aortic and inferior mesenteric veins cannulas are rapidly placed, the body is perfused with preservation fluid, and the organs covered with ice. After the brain dead donor is correctly identified, and all other requirements are fulfilled as per the corresponding protocols. Retractors are used to achieve complete exposure of the chest and abdomen. The right colon is mobilized along its avascular embryological plane of adhesion. Although the usual approach to this mobilization is starting distally at the cecum and proceeding proximally toward the hepatic flexure. Dissecting along the embryological plane of adhesion between transverse colon or mesocolon and greater omentum allows access to the pancreas.
