Sleep Related Breathing Disorders

The book "Sleep Related Breathing Disorders" discusses a group of sleep disorders that have major impact on the cardiovascular and metabolic systems and the neurocognitive and renal functions of the individual. Normal human sleep, and anatomy and physiology of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Airways are discussed in the book. SRBD can be diagnosed through clinical examination, standardized questionnaires, and unattended and attended polysomonography. Epworth sleepiness score (ESS); and, Berlin sleep questionnaire are commonly used. Treatment of OSA includes a multidisciplinary approach involving behavioral, medical and surgical options. Central sleep apnea (CSA) is the cessation of breathing due to absence of respiratory effort during sleep. Physiologic CSA are non-hypercapnic, hypercapnic, CSA associated with endocrine disorders and CSA associated with OSA. Obesity hypoventilation syndrome, cardiac effects as well as noncardiac effects of Sleep related breathing disorders are discussed briefly in this book. Treatment modalities involve positive airway pressure therapy, pharmacotherapy as well as various surgical interventions. Obstructive sleep apnea in children and perioperative management of sleep related breathing disorders are also described in the book.
