Abstract

This chapter discusses facial plastic surgery, where hair restoration is a burgeoning industry with only a small fraction of those who suffer from hair loss actually undergoing surgical hair transplantation. The donor area has a greater tendency toward hypertrophic scarring and scar widening, so a patient should be counseled on this possibility and also maybe even considered for alternative follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique if they insist on wearing their hairstyle short. Middle Eastern hairlines mimic Caucasian hairlines with typical frontotemporal recessions. The foundation for facial plastic surgery as practiced by many otolaryngologists and facial plastic surgeons is rhinoplasty. Single-piece, L-shaped silicone implants over time may produce risky pressure changes in the nasal tip skin and create too defined look in the nose. The Mestizo nose shares similarities to other ethnic noses, depending on the precise ethnic makeup of the individual. The weaker chin structure can oftentimes exacerbate the already flattened appearance of the face that would encourage one to consider some degree of alloplastic augmentation or orthognathic surgery.
