Abstract

This chapter discusses prevention and management of complications in rhinoplasty, where the rhinoplasty surgeon must begin by thoroughly analyzing and understanding the potential pitfalls in both primary and revision surgery as the approach may be practically and philosophically different, in order to prevent failures. Proper preoperative analysis is paramount to ascertain existing nasal anatomy and function. Patient analysis includes not only examination of the nose and its relation to the face and body but a careful evaluation of the patient’s psychosocial status. Preoperative photo analysis can be quite useful for determining irregularities not otherwise apparent to the naked eye or during a basic examination. Bony irregularities are the third-most common aesthetic complaint in patients seeking revision rhinoplasty and definitely among the most common in primary patients as well. Auto-spreader grafts are accomplished by folding the dorsal edge of the ULCs over on themselves after dorsal septal resection.
