Abstract

Basic types of mechanical valves: (1) caged ball, (2) tilting disk and (3) bileaflet valves. Their individual thrombogenicity is directly related to the materials and engineering characteristics of each design. The caged ball valve is the most thrombogenic and the bileaflet valves are associated with a lower risk of thrombosis. Thrombotic valve obstruction can be diagnosed by transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, multidetector cardiac computed tomography, cinefluoroscopy and real-time three-dimensional TEE. The management of PVT depends on thrombus location and size, the patient’s functional class, the risk of surgery or thrombolysis and the clinician’s experience.
