Abstract

The chapter comprises on Lipid Management beyond statins targeting HDL and TG: Challenges 2014. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) are important components of the lipid family. In cholesterol management such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol only lipoprotein to be treated and statin is the only drug to be used. According to Diabetes Care publication in the year 2004 predicted that Indian diabetic population will reach 80 million by 2030. Indians are more prone to this particular dyslipidemia, i.e. atherogenic diabetic dyslipidemia (ADD), for various sociogenetic reasons. The chapter briefly discusses on the issues such as concept of therapy of atherogenic dyslipidemia, High-density Lipoprotein-raising therapies, HATS Study and multiple studies have shown that niacin, fibrates and statins can decrease the risk of CVD and atherosclerosis progression by affecting multiple lipid parameters. Finally the chapter concludes with the remarks as Proper management is still cumbersome and elusive. More research must come from the indigenous population and local guidelines must be formulated.
