Abstract

Atrial fibrillation deals with an abnormal heart rhythm due to rapid and irregular beating. It is classified into four categories: Paroxysmal AF, Persistent AF, Long-standing persistent AF and Permanent AF. The management of AF can be divided into the management of the arrhythmia—acute and long-term and management of complications of the arrhythmia. Treatment is done by rate control, rhythm control and prevention of thromboembolism. Drug therapy for both rate control and rhythm control, except in patients where there is reversible cause, such as, after cardiac surgery, alcohol abuse, and thyrotoxicosis. Rate control therapy is for asymptomatic and elderly patients to restoration of rhythm with persistent symptoms and who are hemodynamically compromised. Rhythm control in AF is used in nonvalvular AF of short duration with no obvious structural abnormality of the LA. TE approach is usage of VKA to maintain therapeutic in valvular AF, AF with CAD, AF in patients with HCM and AF in patients with renal failure.
