Abstract

Health behaviour change refers to the mobilization of internal and external resources to modify lifestyle habits in order to improve health and reduce the risk of illness. The major health behaviour theories include the health belief model, salutogenesis, the transtheoretical model, the protection and motivation theory, the social cognitive theory, the theory of planned behavior and the concept of implementation intentions. There is significant scope for using a theory-driven approach in implementing health programs targeting non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Indian context. Theory can be used to guide change at the individual level as well as the organization or community level.
