Abstract

Echocardiography has become the ubiquitous imaging modality for cardiac pathology used worldwide. This chapter highlights the beginning, present and future of echocardiography. Dr Helmut Hertz and Dr Inge Edler cardiologists began examining the heart with ultrasonoscope; but it could only record limited structures at the back of the heart, and detect differences in the motion of the anterior mitral valve leaflet in patients with mitral stenosis. Then with the advancement of technology the use of motion-mode (M-mode) echocardiography, speckle tracking echocardiography, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional echocardiography was developed. Echocardiography has evolved from a pencil thin ultrasonoscope to complex 3D imaging. The future of echocardiography also lies in its increased availability and education of medical personnel in its use.
