Abstract

More than 90% of the consumables used in cardiac procedures are imported and are a drain on the precious foreign exchange. Hence, there is a need to develop low cost indigenous devices which can be made available to all groups of population at an affordable price. In this chapter various indigenous stents are discussed such as indigenous bare metal stents (Cobal+C, M’Sure-Cr chromium cobalt coronary stent, M’Sure-SS coronary stent), drug-eluting stents (paclitaxel drug-eluting stents, sirolimus-eluting stents), cobalt–chromium peripheral stent and cobalt chromium renal and biliary stent. Percutaneous coronary intervention has entered an exciting phase with newer stent technologies being developed and evaluated, and long-term data of existing indigenous stents showing results comparable to the FDA-approved stents.
