Abstract

The objective of carotid evaluation is to detect diseases of carotid artery, determine its clinical significance and correlating it as a marker of atherosclerotic coronary disease. History taking, physical examination and clinical examination help identifying symptoms and risk factors present. The imaging modalities used for carotid evaluation are carotid duplex ultrasound, computed tomography angiography, magnetic resonance angiography, digital subtraction angiography, PET scan, etc. The general approaches made for carotid evaluation include plaque inflammation and PET scan, vulnerable plaque, carotid endarterectomy and stenting and monitoring treatment. Carotid evaluation gives a unique opportunity for detection of subclinical to complex disease including vulnerable plaques which might cause ACS or stroke.
