Abstract

The term PAD broadly encompasses the vascular diseases caused primarily by atherosclerosis and thromboembolic pathophysiologic processes that alter the normal structure and function of the aorta, its visceral arterial branches, and the arteries of the lower extremity. The treatment of PAD focuses on risk factor modification, cardiovascular event reduction, limb viability, and symptom improvement. The diagnosis of PAD can be done by physical examination, ankle brachial index, toe pressure measurement, duplex imaging, CT angiography, magnetic resonance angiography, etc. Most of the patients with PAD are treated with endovascular revascularization technology. In this chapter PAD is discussed in detail along with its epidemiology, diagnosis and evaluation, therapeutic strategies (conservative treatment and pharmacotherapy), revascularization and endovascular treatment. Acute limb ischemia is also covered along with its evaluation and treatment procedures.
