Abstract

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common medical condition that affects men worldwide. Both ED and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) not only coexist, but also share multiple risk factors. Besides sharing common risk factors, both conditions also appear to have a common pathological basis in the form of impaired endothelial function. ED should prompt investigation and intervention for associated CV risk factors. Prevalence of ED is strongly correlated with patient age; men aged 50–59 years have 3.6 times higher risk of developing ED. Penile blood flow assessment by color Doppler ultrasound has been used as an additional test to identify patients with ED at risk of occult CAD. Studies have suggested that presence of ED is known to predict coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, higher adverse cardiac events as well as increased mortality, independent of conventional CV risk factors. Recognizing and appropriately addressing the relationship between ED and CAD will potentially improve quality of lives and save lives.
