Abstract

Heart failure is one among the most common clinical problems that every practitioner encounters. The clinical diagnosis of heart failure is complex especially in the presence of dyspnea or other pathologies such as respiratory diseases or obesity. In this chapter natriuretic peptides (NP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are discussed in detail. NP has been found to be an important tool that helps clinicians in the diagnosis and management of heart failure. Measurement of BNP or ProBNP is recommended by all the guidelines in patients presenting with dyspnea to rule in or rule out heart failure. An effective heart failure treatment should reduce left ventricular filling pressures and hence it is likely to reduce natriuretic peptide levels.
