Abstract

Anemia is one of the common and significant comorbidity in chronic heart failure (CHF). Anemia always has negative impact on course of CHF patients, as oxygen carrying capacity is reduced critically which adds to further jeopardy of failing myocardium. Some Common etiological factors contributing for anemia in chronic heart failure are decreased cardiac output, cytokines, iron deficiency, renal failure, ACE inhibitors, etc. In this chapter etiology, pathophysiology and treatment of anemia in CHF is discussed in detail. This condition can be treated by iron supplementation, erythropoietin stimulating agents, etc. The primary aim of treatment of HF and anemia is to fulfil the need of oxygen for metabolic performance of the heart and to achieve this, the concentration of hemoglobin should be normal.
