Abstract

This chapter aims to review epidemiological evidence suggesting an association between diabetes and cancer, potential pathogenic mechanisms and the possible link between antidiabetic drugs and cancer risk. Meta-analysis also recommends that diabetes is associated with an increased mortality compared with normoglycemic individuals across all cancer types. Few studies have explored the association of malignancy with type-1 diabetes. Epidemiological studies reported that people with type-2 diabetes are more prone to develop malignancies of pancreas, breast, bladder, endometrium, etc. Potential reasons for this links include factors in diabetes that could lead to cancer: common causality and metabolic abnormalities. The potency of antidiabetic drugs, on cancer, is not conclusive; evidence suggests metformin may have a protective effect. Further studies are needed to illustrate the complex link between diabetes and cancer. This chapter also discusses the topics such as diabetes and cancer, diabetes and cancer, a possible biological link between diabetes and cancer, diabetes treatment and cancer and managing diabetes in patients with cancer.
